DIY Wooden & Woven Bench

I love the look of Scandinavian furniture, and I'm constantly looking for new pieces to add to our apartment! The combination of natural materials like wood, cotton, and warm tones in the furniture is perfect.
I needed a small bench for the end of my bed but I couldn't find a piece that I liked. So I decided I would attempt my first DIY furniture piece "from scratch"! Because when you can't buy it, you might as well try to build to yourself!

I don't know about you, but I love the way it came out! I even accidentally matched the weave on my rug! The bench looks like I spent months putting it together, but it was honestly a super simple DIY build that only took about two afternoons to complete!

My amazing boyfriend Matt put together the bench frame with six pieces of 2x2 douglas fir connected by four castle joints. The castle joints were a design choice that we wanted to incorporate, but they aren't necessary to still achieve the same aesthetic! You could always just do a simple edge joined with a few finish screws. If you are interested in trying the castle joint though, here is the Youtube video that helped us.

This was my first DIY project that involved a weave, so if you're thinking this looks too hard, let me assure you it's not! This was the Youtube video that helped me understand how to start my weave, but I made some of my own design decisions to achieve to final look that I wanted. I did a little weaving research on Pinterest, put on a good TV show (Parks and Rec on repeat, am I right!) and got to work!

I love the versatility of this piece. You could change so many things to make it unique to your own style! One of the ropes could be changed to a different color, or the legs could be painted to add a little extra pop.
There is nothing better than finishing a project from scratch and loving the way it turned out! I hope this helps you start your own DIY furniture piece "from scratch"!
